The İstanbul Museum of Modern Art was founded in 2004 and it’s the first private museum to organize modern and contemporary art exhibitions, occupies an 8,000 square meter site on the shores of the Bosphorus.
The museum’s permanent collection is displayed on the upper floor. In the large hall, the works of prominent artists are exhibited in chronological order, showcasing Turkey’s modern and contemporary art from its beginnings to our day. In the small room on the collection floor are brought together works by prominent representatives of contemporary art from both Turkey and different countries. The collection floor presents, with a contemporary approach, a wide variety of works ranging from painting and sculpture to installation and video from the early 20th century to our day. On the lower floor, two or three exhibitions are held simultaneously in the Temporary Exhibition Hall, Photography Gallery, and Pop-up areas. In the Temporary Exhibition Hall are held conceptual shows and retrospectives presenting examples of modern and contemporary art from Turkey. This hall also hosts large-scale and international exhibitions that point to current transformations in the visual arts.
Istanbul Modern embraces a global vision to collect, preserve, exhibit and document works of modern and contemporary art and make them accessible to art lovers. It’s a great place to visit in this fantastic city. As part of its commitment to sharing Turkey’s artistic creativity with wide audiences and promoting its cultural identity in the international art world, İstanbul Modern hosts a broad array of interdisciplinary activities.
Apart from permanent and temporary exhibition galleries, a photography gallery, and spaces for educational and social programs, the museum offers a cinema, restaurant, design store and an extensive library.
